Reader Tips on Storing Battery-Operated Toys

removing-batteriesWith all the Target toy clearance going on, some of you have really lucked out and have been able to gather gifts at a fraction of the cost for the upcoming Christmas holiday, Birthdays and more, I got a couple of e-mails with some good advice that I thought I would pass along.

Many of you may already do this- but Michelle wrote in a reminder that when it’s possible- it’s always a good idea to remove the batteries from toys that will be stored for an extended period of time. There’s nothing worse than discovering a toy doesn’t work and the culprit is corroded batteries- so better safe than sorry.

I also got this same mention about removing batteries from Tish- who also had a suggestion if you have ever discovered a corroded battery compartment… “while sometimes it’s a lost cause- when it is not that bad- I have found that I have been able to use a little witch hazel or rubbing alcohol on a Q-tip to clean out the compartment and get things working again. It’s worth a try anyway since these products are pretty inexpensive and something most people would have in the house already.”

-Thanks for your e-mails & suggestions to Michelle & Tish!

More Hidden Clearance: Disney Mini Plush Toys

UPDATE: I hear that while many of your stores went 90% Off on Valentine’s today, some of you are discovering that all the hidden finds mentioned over the last few days are now back up to regular price. BUT.. some of you are still finding them at 90%, so it is still worth a scan to check. You will never know unless you scan. Best of luck- hope some of you are still able to score some of these finds.

As I posted earlier- several of you reported finding that your stores dropped their Valentine’s Clearance to 90% Off today. If you haven’t dropped yet, you may drop tomorrow (Wednesday)- but there is no guarantee- there are some stores that will be slower to go.

While much of the Valentine’s day section itself may be wiped out for many of you- there are still some surprises to find that are not marked. So whether you are enjoying the finds at 70% or chomping at the bit for 90%, here’s one more thing to put on the list…

Tracy let me know she found these cute little Disney Mini Plushes in the regular aisles were ringing up at 70% Off. But it looks like they are part of the Valentine’s clearance, as Brandy let me know she found some at her store 90% Off. So if your store is at 90% Off already-these should ring up as low .69.

Tracy found hers at the very end of toys on a shelf with other plush near the toddler toys and they were not signed or stickered, so be sure and scan. Look for Little Nemo, Disney Princess and other Monsters Inc Characters too.

Be sure to check out the other hidden clearance finds I’ve posted- you can sort the blog by clearance to find them fast and you can also check out some of the comments on these posts to see what others are finding too!

-Thanks to Brandy for the heads up & to Tracy of Having Fun Saving for the pictures!

FAQ: A Closer Look at Target Mobile Coupons

Target Mobile Coupons are a very convenient and easy way to get great deals and stretch your savings even further. If you are not familiar with mobile coupons, then this post will hopefully help you understand how they work and how you can get started. Mobile coupons are Target Store coupons that are sent directly to your phone to be used for in-store purchases.

How do I sign up?
You can sign up to receive Target Mobile Coupons HERE. You will need to have an internet-capable phone in order to retrieve the coupons. Keep in mind– text messaging & data charges will apply depending upon your phone’s plan. If you have any questions, you can text HELP to 827438 for information. If you wish to cancel, you can text STOP to 827438 (you’ll receive a confirmation text or further instructions). You can also visit the Target website HERE for more information.

I signed up but I didn’t get the coupons?
Once you’re signed up, the coupons should arrive every other Saturday automatically. Sometimes you may not get the coupons automatically- but you should be able to text the word OFFERS to 827438 and get a text back with a link to the coupons. Once you tap on that link your coupons will come up. *PLEASE NOTE* When first signing up, you may not get the current cycle of mobile coupons, (hopefully you will) but if you don’t, you should be good to go for the next cycle. Target will send alerts to your phone whenever new coupons become available.

How do I redeem my mobile coupons?
All you have to do is show your coupons on your phone’s screen at the register and the cashier will scan the barcode that appears on the top. No scissors required. 🙂 This same bar code at the top applies to all the current coupons, so for example if you are buying 2 different products that there are two different mobile coupons for $1 Off each, when that bar code is scanned, both coupons will come off for a total of $2 savings. Each Target mobile coupon is meant to be redeemed only once as the terms read “Limit one item or offer per coupon” So if you buy 2 identical items, only one coupon will be applied.

Also rememeber- since mobile coupons are still Target Coupons, they can be stacked with MQs. You will find any possible matchups to them under the “MOBILE COUPONS” section on my Target Coupon page.

Target Baby, Plus-size & City Target coupon & savings offers….
Target has other mobile coupon programs and you do not need to be signed up for regular mobile coupons to get these savings. Unlike the regular mobile coupons- these are not on a schedule and offer periodic coupons. Also- for some, first time users will get rewarded right away with an online discount code along with occasional mobile in-store coupon offers. Here’s a summary of the programs currently being offered:

TARGET BABY: You can sign up to receive discounts on baby deals by texting the word “BABY5” to 827438. First time users will receive an instant reward – a code for 10% off Baby Purchase online only, valid for 30 days. You will be alerted to other baby coupons as they become available.

CITY TARGET MOBILE OFFERS: If you are a resident of Seattle, Chicago or Los Angeles, you can also text “CITY” to 827438 to be signed up for occasional mobile coupon offers at your local CityTarget location.

Additional Special Mobile Coupon Offers
From time to time- Target also offers special mobile coupons by texting a certain word. I try and stay on top of the latest ones as much as I can and also offer manufacturer matchups for all mobile coupons on my Target Coupon Page. Just go HERE and scroll down to my “Mobile Coupons” section.

Target Refund/Exchange Policy Know-How

I thought it might be a good idea to take a look at Target’s Return Policy and try and give you a few pointers on how you can try and make the process go smoother. Target says they want your return experience to be as hassle-free as possible, but, there are certain stipulations you need to follow, otherwise you may be out of luck. Most unopened items in new condition returned within 90 days will receive a full refund or exchange, especially when accompanied by a store receipt. However, some items have a modified return policy that gives you less time to return. Your best bet is to check your receipt for a “return by” date, listed under the item on your receipt or packing slip, and in the “item details, shipping” tab if purchased on Target.com.

Return Options
For in-store returns, there are 3 ways Target can attempt to process a return for you: 1) scan your receipt or packing slip, 2) do a receipt look-up if you have the credit card that was used to make the purchase, or 3) do a return or exchange with a valid form of identification if you don’t have the receipt with you. Option #3 in some cases, can be the most difficult to pursue, and on Target’s website, they recommend going online to process the return.

Target Packing Slip
Pictured at top right is an example of Target’s packing slip. There are 2 important numbers that help Target identify your purchase: #1 – the Order ID code found in the top right corner. This number is also included in the confirmation email you received when you placed your order. #2 – the Release ID number which is also in the top right corner. Your packing slip will also outline the available Return Method for your purchase.

Target’s Receipt Look-Up
In most cases, Target stores can verify purchases made in Stores and on Target.com within the last 90 days on a credit or debit card, check or GiftCard using their Refund Look-up System.

TIP: Whenever I make a purchase from Target that I think I may need to return, ie., an appliance that may not work, or a piece of furniture that may not fit my home decor, I write at the top of the receipt, “Keep” and file it away in an envelope in my purse or in a drawer in my desk. That way, I know where to find it when I need it. Now of course, I’m not always so organized. That’s when I rely on Target’s receipt look-up policy. I only use 2 debit cards so if the purchase is not on one, I know its on the other one. Do you have a clever way of keeping your receipts organized? If so, please share it with us in the comments below.

Online Returns
You can also choose to return your item online at Target.com, but, keep in mind that shipping and handling fees will be deducted from the value of your refund unless the return is a result of Target’s error. So you may want to look at the cost of postage before deciding to return online. If you do decide to mail in your return, you can go HERE and follow the instructions provided to process your return and print the prepaid Target.com return label.

Gift Registry Returns
Whenever you receive a gift, remember to keep your PACKING SLIP or GIFT RECEIPT. With it, you can return the item to your local Target store or ship it back to Target with relative ease. If you do not have the Gift Receipt but have a Gift Registry at Target, you can print out your “Gift Purchase Log” anytime from Target.com or at a store Kiosk and use it just like a receipt. You can read more about Target’s Gift Registry Return Policy HERE.

NOTE: Customers do not always let Target know when they are purchasing a gift registry item, in which case, there will not be a record of it on the Gift Purchase Log. You can print a gift receipt but you will need both the Order Number and Release ID to do so.

So a word to all Target gift givers… Please remember to include a gift receipt or packing slip whenever you purchase a gift. They do not display any price information and make returns much easier. You can obtain a gift receipt during checkout at any Target store. If you ever forget to ask for a Gift receipt, bring in your original receipt and Target Guest Services can print as many as you’d like. Or you can print online following the instructions HERE. Just scroll down to where it says, “printing a gift receipt”.

Return Exceptions
There are exceptions to the Target Return Policy in terms of what can be returned or not returned, or only exchanged. For example, did you know that all Halloween costumes and accessories must be returned by 10/31? Or that cameras must be returned within 30 days for a refund or exchange? You can go HERE and scroll down to where it says, “exceptions” to learn more.

Refund Payment
Target’s policy is to issue refunds in the same form as payment originally used for purchase but there are exceptions. You can go HERE and read under “refunds” for more details on how refunds are issued. Included in this list are check purchases, coupon purchases, discounts and promotions and more.
